Markelle Fultz is currently the favourite to be selected with the 1st pick in the 2017 NBA Draft.
It’s also his main goal right now.
However, after he’s potentially taken with the number one pick, he has another very lofty goal in mind – winning the NBA’s Most Valuable Player award as a rookie.
“No. 1 is big for me because I’ve been dreaming about it all my life. I want to come in and kill it. I want to be rookie of the year … honestly, me? I want to be MVP next year,” he said on ESPN710 as transcribed by ESPN.com.
No one has ever won the NBA award as a rookie, so Fultz is aiming for rare air up there.
Alongside Fultz, Lonzo Ball is another potential #1 pick and the two have struck up mutual respect and a budding rivalry with each other.
“I have a lot of respect for him, and he’s supposed to say that. Anyone that’s your competitor is going to think that they’re better,” Fultz said to Sports Illustrated. “To me, it was just funny, he just motivated me to work harder and be sure I put myself further and further in front.”
“He’s going to be [playing] my position, so … if he happens to be the point guard I’m going against, then yeah, I want to get him out the way.”
