Spurs set to sign Aron Baynes

According to a number of reports over the last few hours, the San Antonio Spurs are set to sign Australian big-man Aron Baynes. Baynes is set to sign a 4 year $3.5million deal with a team option for the final two years.

The Spurs bought out Baynes’ contract with Euroleague surprise package Union Olimpija Ljubljana for a reported $400,000.

Baynes has been the form man in the middle in Europe this season, averaging a touch under a Double-Double in Euroleague play with 13.8ppg & 9.8rpg, with his standout game being a dominating 27-10 against Russian powerhouses BC Khimki.

Since being eliminated from Euroleague play last month, Baynes’ form has continued in Adriatic League play where he was named ‘MVP of the Round’ in Week 11.

Baynes gained international attention through his play for the Australian Olympic team as their spark down low off the bench, often combining in a number of highlight alley-oops with St Mary’s standout Matthew Dellavedova.

With the move, Baynes will join Boomers team mate Patty Mills & be reunited with his Olympic coach Brett Brown who is one of Gregg Popovic’s Assistants.

The 26-year-old will join a stacked Spurs front court full of Olympic, International & European experience including Tim Duncan, Tiago Splitter, Boris Diaw & Matt Bonner.

Baynes becomes the 4th Australian to play for the franchise joining Mills, Shane Heal & Andrew Gaze who was a member of the 1999 NBA Championship winning team.

San Antonio are expected to announce the signing as early as tomorrow.
