Hornets to become Pelicans?

Marc Spears from Yahoo! Sports has reported today that from the 2013-14 NBA Season, the New Orleans NBA franchise will now be known as the New Orleans Pelicans.

Since billionare Tom Benson bought the franchise in April 2012, he has flagged his willingness to change the name to give the franchise more of a local feel rather than keeping the name that the team adopted from Charlotte when the franchise relocated in 2002.

The Pelican is the state bird of Louisiana so it fits the brief for local relevance. Other names reported for consideration were – Krewe & Brass.

Charlotte fans may be excited about the possibility of the Bobcats changing their name back to the Hornets, however, this may be logistically unable to be done due to league regulations over nickname ownership.

This will be the second professional sporting franchise called the Pelicans to play in New Orleans. The city previously had a Minor League baseball team called the New Orleans Pelicans that called the city their home from 1887-1977 winning 10 Minor League Championship crowns.

When contacted by #believethehype, the Hornets front office were unable to comment on the rumors that Robin Lopez would in fact be the teams mascot.

Here’s an early sneek-peak at their logo… Anthony Davis would be happy.
